Red Bull, a team accustomed to being at the forefront of Formula 1, is currently grappling with a challenging new reality in the sport’s latest era. The team, based in Milton Keynes, has historically excelled in F1, winning consecutive world titles and dominating from 2010 to 2013. However, in the 2026 season, Red Bull finds itself trailing behind the leading pack as the new regulations have introduced smaller, lighter cars to the grid and mandated a near-50:50 split between internal combustion and electric power in the hybrid engines, a change that has not been well received by driver Max Verstappen.
The season so far has been largely dominated by Mercedes, with their drivers claiming victories in Australia, China, and Japan. In contrast, Red Bull has struggled to achieve strong finishes, with a best result of sixth for Verstappen in Melbourne and eighth for Isack Hadjar in Shanghai. Team boss Laurent Mekies acknowledged the team’s distant position, noting that they are significantly behind Mercedes and struggling to keep pace with other teams like McLaren. Despite racing with new in-house power units developed in collaboration with Ford, Red Bull has found it challenging to unlock the performance potential of their RB22 car.
Mekies expressed confidence in the team’s ability to address their performance issues and make improvements, drawing on their previous success in mounting a late championship charge. However, the team faces setbacks, as they lack valuable track time to fully understand their car and test potential upgrade paths. With a month-long break in the F1 calendar following the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, Red Bull is focused on utilizing this time to analyze their car and power unit further.
