European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a new visa policy to facilitate Indonesian citizens’ entry into the European Union. Indonesians visiting the EU for the second time can now apply for a multi-entry Schengen visa, as revealed during a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Berlaymont Building in Brussels. Von der Leyen highlighted that the visa policy aims to strengthen long-term ties between Indonesia and the EU in various aspects such as education, investment, and social exchange.
The decision on the visa cascade is part of the people-to-people connections pillar of the EU-Indonesia strategic partnership, emphasizing the importance of building bridges between the two regions. President Prabowo welcomed the enhanced mobility between the EU and Indonesia, emphasizing the significance of trust and shared values in fostering long-term relationships. He expressed his view of Europe as a key player in global stability and reiterated the desire for a stronger partnership beyond trade and economics.
The deepening of EU-Indonesia ties marks a new chapter in their bilateral relations, characterized by increased openness, strategic cooperation, and mutual benefits for their respective citizens. With the introduction of the new visa policy and ongoing efforts towards finalizing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), both sides are committed to expanding collaboration and shared opportunities. The future holds promise for stronger ties and continued collaboration between Indonesia and the European Union.
